Dehra Dun to Narkanda

Total Distance: 336kms; Driving Time: 9hrs.

Leave early in the morning to take care of unforeseen delays.
Take the Chakrata Road to Ponta Sahib, 50kms away. There are three causeways between Ponta Sahib and Dehra Dun and could be flooded if it has rained recently.

From Ponta head towards Nahan and from there one can take a hilly road to Kumarhatti (75kms) or go via Panchkula (90kms). We took the Panchkula route as it is a straight and broad road, and due to the rains the hilly road could be blocked due to land slides. 2 kms short of Nahan, at a place appropriately called “Do Sadaka” (two roads), a road descends down to Kala Amb and then onwards to Panchkula, Kalka, Kumahatti, Solan, Shimla and Narkanda. We reached Shimla in 6 ½ hrs.

Between Shimla and Narkanda there is no good place to eat, so have your lunch in Shimla. Do not take the Shimla Bypass as it is a bit longer, instead head for “Lakkar Bazaar” in Shimla and you will find the road to Narkanda. 2 ½ hrs ahead is Narkanda with Hotel Hatu. Narkanda is a beautiful mountain top with lots of people coming to spend a few relaxed days there. Hotel Hatu is an excellent hotel with comfortable rooms and excellent food and a beautiful view. Take the “Deluxe” valley facing rooms for a good view. The town itself is nondescript. If you have time and energy you could drive up to Hatu Peak 8kms away.
