When to go....

For a round trip the best time is July first week.

The road from Shimla to Kaza is open year long, though it has snow from October to March.

The track from Kaza to Manali via Lahul valley has a number of glaciers which are cut open for traffic only after middle of June. It takes a week or two after the road opening to lay temporary bridges over streams and clearing big rocks from the track, so first week of July is the best time. The Monsoons are active over the area until Narkanda and then beyond Kunzum La. The area between has very little amount of rainfall and the Spiti valley is infact a cold desert.
