Pattaya, Thailand

Pattaya, has all the glamour that Thailand is known for. Red light shines almost everywhere but it is also a shoppers paradise.

We stayed at Dustin D2 Pattaya, a very stylish hotel BANG in the center of the touristy area of the city. It is just one street ( 2 mins) away from the beach front. They need you to pay the full amount at time of booking, but they are worth every paisa you pay them. Wi Fi is free. Another good and economical hotel we stayed was Bar On Beach...it is literally on beach and quite reasonably prices but not as stylish as Dustin.

Right in front of the hotel is the Post Office Soi (lane) which leads to the beach front. There are three roads parallal to the beach, Dustin is on the 2nd one with dozens of roads or sois linking all of them . Like Vikrams in Doon, there are numerous shared taxis running every few minutes along each parallal road and one can hop in and hop off at will. The whole area is a market place and you can just keep walking and walking. To the right of hotel is "Ripley's Believe it or not" a must visit if you have kids. Eating is definetly a no no in the hotel and there is no free breakfast. Just to the left of the hotel is "Nag Head" where you get good wholesome breakfast at 125 Bath per head. Adjacent to the Nag Head is Reun Thai Restaurant, a bit expensive but good.

A visit to Koh Larn or Coral Island is a must. Reach the beach road and at the Southern end of it is a jetty from which government boats go every hour to the island @ 30 bath per head for a 40 min journey. There are numerous private boats also at 1500 bath. Ignore everyone trying to sell you a ticket and head straight for the big boat which would be full of people. You pay as you get in and there are no tickets. Don't go to Koh Larn wearing shoes !

At Koh Larn first check the return timings of the boat, so you don't waste time waiting for the boat, then explore the market at the jetty, and finally hire a scooter @ 200 bath, leave a photocopy of your passport as security, and drive to the various beaches. Inspect the scooter before you take off and is possible photograph it with your mobile in front of the owner from every angle to avoid disputes at the time of return. Our favourite beach was the Thian , which has nice shady trees right on the beach. On the beach are beach chairs available for hire, take just one even if you are many as rest will probably be in water and one is good enough for keeping luggage, unless you plan to do sun bathing.
