Fourth Annual Dehra Dun Tree Festival held

Over 2000 Doonites participated in the Fourth Dehra Dun Annual Tree Festival, which is the flag ship event of Citizens For Green Doon. Held in the grounds of St. Jospeh’s Academy, the event saw children from over 13 schools and 5 colleges participating, for fun, for competition and for showing their skills.

Pride of Green Doon Award being given to Alok Ulfat

Inaugurated by Uttarakhand DGP, Satyavrat Bansal & Vivek Tiwari from Max India Foundation, the festival also saw noted theatre artist and environmental activist Alok Ulfat being given the “Pride of Green Doon” Award. Receiving the Award, Alok said that development and hectic modern life were destroying the peace of man and his environment. He said that we should consider the environmental impact of all the things we do in our daily lives if we care for Mother Earth. Pride of Green Doon award is given to those Doonites who work for the environment. DGP Bansal also called upon everyone to plant atleast one tree and look after it. He also called upon Doonites to work to make the valley a beautiful place once again and to stop littering on streets. After lightening of the lamp, Nuns from Sakya Nursery performed a prayer to save the environment.

The festival saw fierce competitions between teams in various events, including face painting, General Knowledge Quiz, collage making from waste materials, cartoon making and photography. Students from St Joesph’s Academy literally made a clean sweep in English & Hindi Essays. Prizes were given away by noted journalist Raj Kanwar & Bro AJ George the Principal of St Joseph’s Academy.

Afterlife, a Rock band in Doon and Megahertz a fusion band performed much to the delight of audience. Participants were seen dancing to the beats of the drums. Noted puppeteer Ramlal, taught over 50 participants how to make puppets and use them. The students later performed on stage which stressed on the importance of trees on the lives of animals. Various NGOs working in the field of environment like MAD, KAASH, YUVA FOUNDATION also set up information counters to tell the visitors about their work. Yuva distributed free seeds to participants.

Towards the end, Dr Nitin Pandey, Chief Coordinator Citizens For Green Doon, thanked the organizing secretaries, Prasanna Kapoor, Shubhendra Singh and Shruti Kaushik for their hard work and Max India Foundation & ICICI Bank for sponsoring the festival. He called upon everyone to celebrate a Green Diwali by lightening diyas and avoiding the use of crackers.
