Bus, stop!

Plight of DIT / MIS Students in Doon

27-Aug-2008
DIT and MIS are two premier institutes of Dehradun, where students from all over India study. The campuses of both colleges are about four kms away from the city. A majority of students live in the city and commute daily to the colleges. Both the colleges run a number of buses to pick up the students but because a number of children are from middle class families, they cannot afford the Rs.10,000 per annum bus charges. Besides this amount has to be paid lump sum at the beginning of each year, which can be difficult for many. Assuming that colleges are open 10 months a year with 25 working days a month, this works out to Rs.40 per day, while a student spends only Rs.14 per day in a public bus. This results in either they buying their own vehicles, if their parents can afford it or go in public buses.

While the city buses run every 10-15 minutes on the Rajpur route, they are always jam packed during college hours due to the sheer volume of students and other passengers and it is a common sight to see students precariously hanging outside the buses. Punishing bus owners is no solution because of the desperation of the students to reach the college in time.

Accidents involving students driving to and back from colleges are also quite common. If these college buses could be run on no-loss-no-profit basis and the fee accepted in two or three installments instead of one, the daily hassles in the lives of college students could be reduced and girls provided a safe and economical way of reaching college.
