Maj Anuj Singh
33yr old Maj. Kunwar Anuj Singh, a Doonite, was yesterday awarded the Shaurya Chakra by the President for his exemplary courage. Maj. Anuj Singh was commissioned in the Indian Army in 2000 and is presently serving in J&K with 59 Rashtriya Rifles. This medal in recognition of his bravery during an operation in Pir Panjal Range in the second week of September when he shot dead 4 Pakistani trained militants. Details of the operation are not known at present, as the Officer himself is in field in J&K.
Son of Late Maj. Raja Ravinder Singh of Riyasat Doonga, Anuj Singh was born and brought up in Dehradun. His initial schooling was in St. Joseph’s Academy and he graduated from SRCC, Delhi. He was selected in 1999 for the 108th course at the Indian Military Academy and after completion of the course was posted with 16 Guards in Kupwara Sector.
Celebrations broke out in Doonga House, which is situated behind Hotel Pacific, as soon as news of the award came through. An emotional Mrs. Savita Singh, Anuj Singh’s mother and one of the oldest residents of Dehradun, said that she was glad that her son lived up to the family tradition of valour in battle field. This bravery feat by her youngest son reminded her of the time her husband, Late Maj. Raja Ravinder Singh, stood outside the Lahore Police Station in 1971.
Distributing sweets to a crowd of well wishers who descended on Doonga House on hearing the news, Thakur Arjun Singh, the elder brother of the Major, said that Rajputs were known world over for their courage & bravery. He said that it is a proud moment for the family and he wished his father was alive to see this day.
Family gather to celebrate
Laksha Mehta, Anuj’s elder sister, remembered the day he was born and said that a trait which stood out since childhood was that Anuj did everything to the best of his ability. On a reminiscent note she added that she did not remember a single day when her younger brother got a scolding, either in school or at home. Mrs. Vani Singh, wife of Maj. Anuj Singh, said that she always knew that her husband was a brave solder and today she was proud of being his wife.

The Investiture Ceremony for the awards is likely to take place in April 2010 at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi.
